DEKAD NO. 25 SEPTEMBER 1-10, 2017

PHILIPPINE AGRI-WEATHER FORECAST

The weather systems that will affect the whole country are southwest monsoon, intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and low pressure area (LPA).

During the early days of the dekad, the province of Mindoro, extreme Northern Luzon and the regions of Ilocos, Central Luzon, Cordillera and CALABARZON will have rainshowers and thunderstorms due to southwest monsoon. After this, Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas will experience cloudiness with rainshowers and thunderstorms. This condition will continue over the whole Luzon during the middle of the dekad while the rest of the country will have good weather. During the remaining days of the forecast period, the whole country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

The western section of Luzon will have winds from the southwest to south while the rest of the country will have winds coming from the southwest during the early days of the dekad. After this, the extreme northern portion of Luzon will have winds coming from the southwest while the rest of the country will have winds from the south to southwest throughout the remaining days of the dekad.

The seaboards of Luzon and Visayas will be moderate to rough while the rest of the country will have slight to moderate seas during the early days of the forecast period. After this, the coastal waters of the whole country will be slight to moderate throughout the remaining days of the dekad.

The eastern and central equatorial Pacific is in neutral condition.

FARM ADVISORIES

In rainfed areas, building a 1,500 sq. m small farm water reservoir can store enough rainwater to irrigate 1 ha of rice paddy during the dry season, producing 75 cavans of palay.

For good water management during the early vegetative stage, maintain 3-5 cm water.  For maximum tillering stage up to flowering, maintain 5 cm water depth. One to 2 weeks before harvest, drain field. Water stress during the flowering stage results in empty or half-filled grains.

Yellow-ripe to ripe grains do not require much water. Gradually reduce water level to avoid immature grains and broken kernels. Delayed draining, however, prolongs ripening of grains.

FARMING ADVISORIES:

·         CONTINUE DAILY FARM ACTIVITIES SUCH AS LAND PREPARATION, HARVESTING OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, PLANTING AND TRANSPLANTING;

·         MAINTAIN CLEANLINESS OF CANALS OR DITCHES TO AVOID FLASHFLOODS DUE TO HEAVY RAINS BROUGHT BY THUNDERSTORMS;

·         STORE HARVESTED CROPS IN ELEVATED AND COVERED PLACES;

·         USE COVERED VANS WHEN TRANSPORTING GOODS TO THE MARKETPLACE;

·         CREATE SMALL WATER IMPOUNDING RESERVOIR TO CATCH RAINWATER FOR FUTURE USE.

FISHING ADVISORIES:

THE COASTAL WATERS OVER THE EXTREME NORTHERN  LUZON WILL BE MODERATE TO ROUGH SEAS. ELSEWHERE, IT WILL BE SLIGHT TO MODERATE SEAS.  REMINDER TO OUR FISHERFOLKS, ESPECIALLY TO THOSE USING SMALL BOATS. BE EXTRA CAREFUL AND ALWAYS BRING EMERGENCY KIT WHEN GOING OUT INTO THE SEA AND BE UPDATED FOR THE LATEST WEATHER FORECAST AND FARM ADVISORIES.

PRESS RELEASE
24 May 2017

START OF SOUTHWEST MONSOON

Southwesterly windflow has been dominant over the West Philippine Sea for several days now. This is due to the formation of semi-permanent trough over Northern Luzon-Taiwan area and the eastward migration of the North Pacific High Pressure Area which are the prominent indicators of the southwest monsoon onset in the country.

Likewise, the prevailing weather condition in most parts of Luzon and Visayas particularly the western section is now warm and humid as characterized by occasional to frequent occurrences of afternoon-evening or early morning rainshowers and thunderstorms. These developments signify the approaching onset of rainy season under Type 1 climate covering the western parts of Luzon and Visayas.
